What's more alarming: About a third of those deaths and injuries involved children under the age of 16.
"ATVs are not toys. Children should only ride youth-model ATVs. There have been too many children killed while driving or riding as a passenger on adult ATVs," Nord said.
The importance of safety and training are two key messages included in the commission's new campaign calling for riders to "Take Knowledge to the Extreme."
Also part of the campaign are new TV and radio public service announcements and a new Web site www.ATVSafety.gov.
