Ken Burns is a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, but on Monday night he slipped into a personalized Cardinals jersey and stood on the mound at Busch Stadium to throw a ceremonial first pitch before the Cards played the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"Of course, I've been accused before of ignoring the Cardinals," he said in a suite at Busch Stadium, the scent of hot dogs in the air and a TV set blaring the game behind him. "But even in 18 hours, 'Baseball' couldn't be encyclopedic, and you wouldn't have wanted it to be encyclopedic. We had to decide which stories to tell, because baseball is a game of stories."
The Yankees, obviously, would be central to "Baseball," dominating it as the franchise has dominated the game, he said.
"Then we chose one team from the American League (the Red Sox) and one from the National League (the Dodgers) to focus on."
Burns and his team "debated strongly using the Cardinals from the National League.
